Course Objectives:

 This course is designed for a professional purohit for societal purpose, simultaneously
for an individual who is well versed in Sanātan Dharma paddhati.
 Creates correlation with karmānubandha.
 Indian Knowledge tradition which can generate livelihood as well as dharma for societal change.
 Scientific basis of ritualistic tradition of India, correlation with the cosmos, hence for human’s well-being as well as for peaceful society.

Syllabus:

This syllabus focuses on three aspects of paurohitya:

Unit I:

Śāntika Karma (Rituals of Peace)-
Purpose of Śānti karmās, Grahaśāntiprakaraņa, Nakşatraśāntiprakaraņa, Vāstuśāntiprakaraņa,
Pitŗkarmaśāntiprakaraņa, Yajňa, Pūjā-paddhti.

Unit II:

Pauşţika Karma (Rituals of Nourishment)-
Purpose of Pauşţika karmās, Şodaśa Samskāra – Garbhādhāna, Punsavana, Sīmanntonayana,
Jātkarma, Nāmakaraņa, Nişkramaņa, Annaprāśana, Karņavedha, Chudākaraņa, Vidyārambha,
Upanayana, Vedārambha, Keśānta, Samāpavartana, Vivāha, Antyeşti.

Unit III:

Śāntika & Pauştika Ubhayapakşi Karma (Dual aspect Rituals)-
Ceremonies of Well-being: Gŗha-praveśa, Rāmāyaņa-kathā, Śrīmadbhāgvadkathā, Agnihotra.

Unit IV:

Importance and Practice of Correct Pronunciation of Sanskrit in Paurohitya-karma. Mantra
chanting and memorizing.

Expected Learning Outcome:

 Develop an understanding of vedic rituals which address peace, harmony on one side
while well-being of an individual and masses on the other side.
 Basic techniques of sanātana dharma which explains the chain of birth and death and
the life in between.
 Provides a scientific and logical approach of human existence and its correlation with
cosmos.

Scientific connection of paurohitya tradition to the cosmos, hence for human’s well-being as well as for peaceful society.

Syllabus:

This syllabus focuses on five aspects of paurohitya:

Unit I:

Preliminary Introduction of –
Technical terms: Sanātana Dharma, Vedic Karmakāņda, Vedic- paddhati, Paurohitya and Purohita, Yajamāna, Ritvija, Paňca-mahā-yajňa, Pūjā, Archanā, Kīrtana, Japa, Kathāvācana, Pāţha, Upavāsa, Vrata, Snāna and Dāna.

Materials’ Significance: Rolī, Maulī or Kalāvā, Akşata, Auspicious Tree Leaves – Mango, Jambu etc., Dadhi, Gangājala, Carnāmŗta, Paňcāmŗta, Cow-dung, Mŗttikā, Grass – durvā, kuśā etc. Gorocana, Ghī/ Oil lamp, Incense sticks and perfumes, Devatā-vigraha, Jala-kumbha, Ghaņţā, Conch, Other musical instruments, Tulasī, Sesame etc.

Unit II:

Selection of Time for Pūjā and Sacrifices:
Introduction of Paňcānga, Panchānga vs. Ephemeris, Tithi, Vāra, Nakşatra, Yoga & Karaņa. Grahaņa (Eclipse), Pitŗpakşa/ Śrāddha, Navarātri, Dikśūla, Ayana, Sankrānti, Māsa, Rāśi, Lagna, Festivals, Vratas.

Practice and proficiency in Paňcānga Reading.

Unit III:

Nitya Pūjana Paddhati and Viśişţa Pūjā Paddhati.
Śikhābandhanam, Yajňopavīta-dhāraņam, Pavitrī-dhāraņam, Tilak-dhāraņam, Sankalpa-vidhi, Sandhyāvidhi & Tarpaņa-vidhi, Kula-devatā, Gram-devatā etc. Śrī Gaņeśa-Gaurī Pūjanam. Navagraha-pūjana-maņdalam.

Unit IV:

Stuti-prakaraņam: Gaņeśa-paňca-ratnam, Āditya-hŗdaya-stotram, Śrīsūktam, Navagraha-stotram, Śiva- paňcākşara-stotram, Śrīrāma-rakşā-stotram & Sapta-ślokī-durgā.
Pūjā-prakaraņam: Nava-rātri-pūjanam
Kathā–prakaraņam: Śrī-satya-nārāyaņa-vrata-kathā
Mānas-japa-prakaraņam: Śiva-samkalpa-sūkta

Unit V:
